People all over the land felt spooky. As we got closer to the start of the trails, we could feel a breeze. This is going to be a great trip in Sweden that you can’t do anywhere else. The holes are full of weeds and a lush green color. The paths in this area were full of history and beauty. Being in one of the mines made us feel like we had been moved to Jurassic Park because the overgrown plants looked like they had never been touched. At times, it looked like the mine went on and on and on. I did not want to get stuck in the mine at all!

About Högbergsfältet

Since 1979, this area has been a conservation area. Here are some of the oldest mines in all of Varmland province. Close to these mines is Lake Yngen, which has clear water. There are trails all over the nature area. Iron ore was dug here in the Middle Ages. At 215 meters deep, Torskeback mine was the deepest and largest mine at the time. Woah! There was use for the caves until 1906. Follow the paths until you reach a small church with a well-kept graveyard.

One of the mines is called Tilas Stoll and it dates back to 1767. It was named for Daniel Tilas, who was mayor from 1712 to 1772. This used to be a place where workers could get the ore. It has a hole in it that helps get the materials that were dug out. Many times, a stoll is used to get water out of a mine.

Things to Do

People don’t often come here because these tracks aren’t very well known. You can hike to mines that are overgrown from paths. Or, you could follow them to a cute little square church. There is even a bell tower on these walks that you can visit. You can also enjoy the lovely views from the top of Hogberg, a high mountain. Eat some tasty food and have a meal near the clear, crystal water. In this case, there are a number of picnic places off the trail, and some parts of the trail go along the clear blue lake Yngen. Everyone in the family will enjoy this spot!

Venture into a Creepy Old Mine

We walked to a tunnel that looked very scary. It let out a cool air that hit my face. I wasn’t sure about this because my feelings were all over the place. At the front door, there was a figure of a troll inside a small building. A basket full of pacifiers is in front of him. My husband said it would help the kids grow. Their troll would get their pacifier, which would show that they no longer need it.

As soon as we started our trip into the mine, my adrenaline started to pump very hard. In the cave, it was very dark and damp. There was a light at the end, though, which made me feel hopeful. I couldn’t take any more steps because I didn’t know what was at the end of the path. When we finally got out of the tunnel and into an open area, my heart started to beat more normally.

My eyes were filled with shock. I’ve never seen such beauty before! Beautiful green plants grow up the sides of the walls and cover some of the ground as well. In the middle of everything is a clear pond that makes it feel like there is life. This makes me think of a time when people hadn’t been to that place yet. The best place to get away from it all in Sweden is this old mine, which is called Tilas Stoll.

How to Get There

The city of Filipstad is about 100 miles (160 km) away from Hogbergsfaltet. Even though it’s hidden, you’ll be amazed at how far away in Sweden you can get to this place. There isn’t a public way to get to this nature area. To get there, you’ll need to rent a car. You can take E18 if you’re coming from Stockholm. After that, get on E20 and then turn left for E4. Look for the signs that say “E18.” Leave at Route 50. That’s where you need to go. Google Maps can help you find your way more precisely.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to go is when the birds are singing loudly and the lush grass comes to life. This would happen in the spring or summer. Seeing the wild come to life makes it more beautiful. Along the lake and some of the walks, you can see wildflowers in full bloom. Not many people know about it in Sweden, so it’s not easy to find a lot of information about it. People who live in the area know about this beautiful spot, but not many people have been there. It is an event that you should have!

Gear Needed for Högbergsfältet Nature Reserve

There is a lot of brush in the mines, so you should bring good hiking boots. Remember that Sweden has rainy weather, so bring a rain jacket. Bring a daypack with you and a water bottle because hiking the paths can take more than two hours. I always believe that it’s better to have too much than not enough. I know that, but I still forget it sometimes.
