The lighthouse in Kompong Cham was far from the beaten path when we got there. I couldn’t wait to get over my fear of heights. But when I saw the so-called “stairs,” my heart stopped. There, up high, where the wind blows stronger, was the top.

The stairs were more like ladders that were joined together with flat metal pieces. “No way!” my niece said. I’m not going to do it!” For me, I had to feel. I started going up the first ladder one step at a time. It was easy to do the first two ladders. My nerves were getting worse as I got closer to the top, though. With each step I took toward the top, I could feel pins going through my feet.

Overcoming a Fear of Heights

I was unable to look down anymore. My heart rate had gone up. It was getting harder and harder to keep going with each step. I thought my knees were going to give out at the last ladder. Every step made my body shake. It felt like my knees were giving out all the time. But I kept going and didn’t give in to my fear.

When I finally got to the top, my adrenaline was pumping through my body like crazy. I took a look outside and walked around for a while. I didn’t trust my legs, though. Moving past the new problem is now the next step. What an adventure this trip through Cambodia has been.

Never Give up

Don’t give up on yourself. Don’t think about what you can do until you do it. Don’t give up before you even try to do something. What you can do will surprise you! Don’t give up when things get hard or when you’re stressed. You’re strong!

About the Old French Lighthouse

The Mekong is one of the best rivers in Asia, and this nice, quiet town is right on it. This tall lighthouse stands tall over the river. The little market is across the street from this old French lighthouse. This building used to be just a shell not long ago. But these days, more and more backpackers are coming to this Cambodian spot that isn’t on the main tourist route. All of this doesn’t get rid of the scary metal ladders you have to climb to get to the top, though. If you like facing your fears like I do, then go for it!

When you get to the top, you’ll be able to enjoy a beautiful view of both nature and town. Try not to think about how high you are while you watch cars go by on the Kazuma bridge. It was built in the 1900s as a colonial lighthouse so that cargo boats on the river could be seen.
