Nestled snugly in my cozy sleeping bag while wild camping in Sweden, I’m greeted by the melodious chorus of birds as they rouse from their slumber, heralding the start of a new day in the wilderness. Nature awakens with a vibrant hum of life, setting the stage for a morning filled with tranquility and adventure. As the sun begins to cast its gentle rays, we gather around for morning tea, accompanied by the comforting aroma of steaming hot oatmeal. Our trusty propane burner proves its worth, ensuring our culinary delights are ready for the day ahead.

About Sweden

Sweden, one of the captivating Scandinavian countries with a rich history of Vikings and folklore, is a land of enchanting contrasts. Home to over 10.42 million people in 2021, it boasts an astonishing 70% forest cover, beckoning adventurers to explore its vast natural wonders. With a staggering 100,000 lakes scattered across the country, the call to embark on an outdoor escapade is nearly impossible to resist. Swedes, known for their deep reverence for nature, have set a remarkable goal of achieving “100% fossil-free” energy in their electricity mix. Remarkably, 52% of Sweden’s waste is transformed into energy, while 47% is diligently recycled, leaving a mere 1% destined for landfills. Engaging with Swedes, you’ll discover their penchant for outdoor walks and adventures, regardless of the weather, as they cherish their breathtaking surroundings.

While traversing Sweden, you’ll notice Swedish as the predominant language, yet a remarkable 86% of the population is fluent in English, making travel seamless for those unfamiliar with Swedish. The Swedish currency, known as Swedish crowns or “kronor” (pronounced krow nuh) in Swedish, is symbolized as SEK or kr, an emblem of their monetary system.

Facts Of Sweden

  • Stockholm proudly stands as the capital of Sweden.

  • While Swedish is the official language, numerous minority languages add cultural diversity.

  • Sweden celebrates its National Day on June 6th.

  • The country’s highest peak, Kebnekaise, reaching 2,097 meters in Northern Sweden, faces challenges due to melting glacier peaks.

  • Sweden’s prowess in recycling is so advanced that it imports waste from other nations to convert it into renewable energy.

  • Working in Sweden offers a minimum of 5 weeks of paid holiday.

  • The grandeur of Lake Vänern, spanning 5,650 square kilometers, graces the Swedish landscape.

About the Wilderness

The chance to encounter Sweden’s wildlife varies depending on your location within the country. In Northern Sweden, reindeer sightings are not uncommon, as the indigenous Sami people allow these magnificent creatures to roam freely, with seasonal fluctuations. In central Sweden, while venturing into nature, you’ll likely encounter deer and, on occasion, majestic moose. Moose sightings can be frequent, particularly if you reside in forested areas, as I do. The cunning fox also graces our presence, albeit causing some mischief, especially when we had chickens. In response, we shared our feathered friends with fox-free friends. In our current forested abode, our neighbor raises cows, and wild encounters have become rarer.

Public Access – Allemansrätten

One of Sweden’s most cherished laws, Allemansrätten, translates to “the right for public access” or simply “the right to roam.” Under this law, individuals can freely explore nature, keeping a respectful distance from homes and nurturing the environment. You’re permitted to set up a tent in the same spot for up to 2 days before moving on to another location or concluding your outdoor adventure.

While Allemansrätten grants substantial freedom, it does come with restrictions. Protected areas, such as nature reserves and national parks, may have designated camping zones. Moreover, it’s essential to avoid camping within someone’s private yard, maintaining a distance of at least 900 meters from homes. For a deeper understanding of Allemansrätten, you can explore at Visit Sweden.

When contemplating a campfire, always check for any ongoing fire bans. If it’s permitted, utilize dead branches and sticks for your fire. The guiding principle of this law is succinctly put as, “Do not disturb, do not destroy.” For additional guidance, the Crisis Information website offers valuable insights into responsible outdoor practices.

About Wild Camping

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to go wild camping in Sweden? Imagine being surrounded by breathtaking nature, where you can set up your tent anywhere you please, all while respecting the beauty of mother nature. That’s the essence of wild camping in this Scandinavian wonderland. Whether you’re embarking on a day-long hike or planning a multi-day wilderness expedition, a trusty tent is your best companion. As you embark on this adventure, remember that food and water are your lifelines. In Sweden, the water is so pure that you can drink it straight from the source, but don’t forget your trusty water bottle. My husband and I often fill ours with crystal-clear lake water, perfect for brewing a soothing cup of tea or whipping up a delicious campfire meal while we explore the untamed wilderness.

Now that you’re intrigued, it’s time to plan your camping trip in Sweden’s pristine natural landscapes. For a successful wild camping experience, it’s essential to find a dry spot to pitch your tent. The lush forests are often your best bet, though some may have mossy grounds. If you’re feeling adventurous, consider camping amidst the rugged beauty of the mountains. Just keep in mind that the ground here is mostly rocky, making it challenging to secure your tent.

What you Need:

To ensure a safe and enjoyable wild camping adventure in Sweden, you’ll want to pack the right essentials. Here’s a handy checklist to guide you:

  • Backpack: Choose a daypack or a larger one, depending on the length of your adventure.

  • Rain Protection: Pack a rainfly for your bag and a rain jacket, as Swedish weather can be unpredictable.

  • Sustenance: Bring an ample supply of food and snacks to keep your energy up.

  • Cooking Gear: Carry a small propane burner with a pot or the means to make a fire for cooking.

  • Hydration: Stay hydrated with a water bottle, and don’t forget to appreciate Sweden’s crystal-clear waters.

  • Footwear: Invest in waterproof boots or shoes to keep your feet dry and comfortable.

  • Safety First: A first aid kit is essential for any unforeseen situations.

  • Clothing: Depending on the season, layer up appropriately and bring extra clothes.

  • Toiletries: Opt for eco-friendly toothbrush and toothpaste options.

  • Seasonal Gear: Adapt to the weather with sunscreen in summer and warm coats, hats, and gloves in winter.

  • Sleeping Gear: Ensure your sleeping bag matches the season you’re camping in.

  • Tent: Select a tent that can withstand the season’s conditions.

  • Navigation: Bring a compass in case your phone’s GPS fails.

  • Charging: Carry a phone battery charger, preferably one that charges by solar power.

With these essentials in tow, you’ll be well-prepared to embark on a memorable wild camping adventure in Sweden. Whether you’re exploring lush forests or rugged mountains, the beauty of the Swedish wilderness awaits you.

Nature Reserves

Sweden is a land of natural wonders, boasting over 5,000 captivating nature reserves waiting to be explored. However, when you embark on your journey to these pristine havens, remember that wild camping is only permitted in designated areas. This rule helps preserve the untouched beauty of nature and ensures it remains unspoiled. As you venture into a nature reserve, tread lightly, stick to the marked trails, and leave no trace behind. These reserves are a vital part of our efforts to conserve biodiversity. By allowing these areas to heal and recover on their own, we can breathe life back into natural environments and protect endangered species. Keep an eye out for signs or posts marked with a white star, indicating a nature reserve. It’s crucial to respect these boundaries when planning your wild camping adventure in Sweden.

One of my personal favorites among these remarkable nature reserves is the enchanting Glaskogen, nestled in the Värmland county. This region, renowned for its abundant natural beauty, is also my home. Living here has allowed my husband and me easy access to the wonders of nature, and Glaskogen captured our hearts with its breathtaking wilderness.

Glaskogen offers an array of outdoor activities, making it a haven for hiking, canoeing, and kayaking enthusiasts. If you’re planning an overnight stay and desire the convenience of showers, be prepared for a small fee. To learn more about this captivating destination, check out the Glaskogen Nature Reserve.
