Discover the Magic of Sweden Outdoors: Unmissable Must-Dos

Sweden outdoors offers a plethora of unforgettable experiences for adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike. From the breathtaking landscapes to the cultural wonders, exploring the outdoors in Sweden is a journey like no other. In this guide, we’ll delve into the must-dos when venturing into Sweden’s great outdoors, so you can make the most of your Scandinavian journey. Personally, I’ve always enjoyed venturing out in nature on hikes, canoeing, or camping.

Embrace the Midnight Sun

One of the most surreal experiences in Sweden is witnessing the midnight sun. In the northern parts of the country, particularly in Lapland, during the summer months, the sun never fully sets, creating a mesmerizing twilight that bathes the landscapes in a glow of sunlight. Embrace the endless daylight and enjoy activities like hiking, fishing, or simply basking in the beauty of nature under the enchanting midnight sun. Or, if you plan on visiting during Midsommar (midsummer), you can enjoy the long days while taking in the Swedish traditions.

Delight in Wild Berry Picking

As summer approaches, the forests of Sweden transform into berry havens. Venture into the wilderness and indulge in the age-old tradition of wild berry picking. Discover the sweet and tart flavors of wild strawberries, lingonberries, blueberries, and raspberries. Berry picking is not only a delightful family adventure but also an opportunity to connect with nature and savor the pure taste of Sweden’s wilderness.

Recently, the berries have been sprouting later than usual. This year, they haven’t come until July since the weather has been staying colder longer. But we will see how next year goes! You can learn more about berry picking in my article, Berry Picking in Sweden is the Efficient Way.

Wander the Majestic National Parks

Sweden is home to an impressive 30 national parks, each boasting its unique charm. Explore the rugged terrains of Abisko National Park, known for its stunning mountains and the captivating northern lights. Or wander through Sarek National Park, a remote wilderness paradise where untouched landscapes and abundant wildlife await. Don’t forget to visit Djurgården, the green oasis in the heart of Stockholm, offering a peaceful retreat with picturesque views. There’s even my favorite so far, Tiveden National Park, where there are loads of stories throughout the park. Learn more at Swedish National Parks.

Journey Through the Nature Reserves

There are over 5,000 nature reserves in Sweden. Sweden outdoors in these areas all vary. You can see the marshlands, mountains, or the lovely Glaskogen nature reserve, which is my favorite. Since these are protected areas, you only can camp in the designated places. That’s the same for national parks as well.

If you’re curious to learn more about Sweden’s nature reserves, then check out their website. You can learn more as to why they are reserved and how much area that they cover.

Seek Adventure in the Archipelago

With over 30,000 islands, the Swedish archipelagos invite you to embrace the spirit of adventure. Embark on a canoeing journey through the tranquil waters, hop from island to island on a boat excursion, or simply unwind on beaches. The archipelago is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, providing endless opportunities for exploration and relaxation.

There are archipelagos in Gothenburg, outside of Stockholm, the High Coast, and in several other places in Sweden. You can learn more about Swedish archipelagos at Visit Sweden.

Experience Fika in the Wild

Fika is a Swedish tradition that involves taking a break with coffee and a delicious treat, like cinnamon buns or pastries. Embrace the art of fika during your outdoor adventures. Find a tranquil spot, brew a cup of coffee over a campfire (or tea), and indulge in delectable Swedish treats while surrounded by nature’s beauty.

Fika is something many swedes cherish. They see it as a way to bond with family and friends over a warm brew and yummy snacks. Enjoy a piece of the Swedish culture while you’re out in nature by doing this.

Stare in Awe at the Northern Lights

Venturing into Sweden outdoors also presents an incredible opportunity to experience the unique phenomenon of the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis. Head to the northernmost regions of the country, such as Abisko National Park or Kiruna, during the winter months for the best chance to see this celestial light show. As the skies dance with vibrant hues of green, pink, and purple, you’ll be left in awe of nature’s grand spectacle. Gazing at the mesmerizing Northern Lights under the star-studded sky is an unforgettable experience that will leave you with a deeper connection to the natural wonders of Sweden.

You might be even lucky to see the northern lights in Värmland as well. There have been times where it can be seen in the sky. You just have to stay up late enough for it and hope for a clear nightsky. Learn more about The Best Places for the Northern Lights in Sweden.

Connect with Swedish Wildlife

Sweden’s wilderness is home to a diverse range of wildlife, from majestic moose to elusive wolves and graceful reindeer. Keep your eyes peeled for these magnificent creatures as you explore the outdoors. Wildlife safaris and guided tours offer a chance to observe animals in their natural habitats while promoting responsible and sustainable interactions with wildlife.

Where I live in Värmland county, it’s common to see moose out roaming. Lately, we’ve been seeing foxes as well! So, if you want to see them, I suggest venturing to Värmland county. Or, if you go further north, it’s common to see wild reindeer. Although technically they’re not wild since the Sami people own them. They just let them roam free.

In Sweden’s outdoors, every moment is an opportunity for adventure and wonder. Whether you’re hiking through ancient forests, savoring wild berries, or soaking in the midnight sun, you’ll be captivated by the sheer beauty and serenity that this Nordic wonderland has to offer. Enjoy the magic of Sweden outdoors and create cherished memories that will last a lifetime.

About Me

Misfit Wanders

I´m a kooky girl that likes to travel. I grew up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, USA. Then moved to Northern California for about 5 years. But now, it's going on 5 years living in Sweden with my hubby and our furbabies, plus our little boy and my mom has joined our crew! Over the pandemic time, it has been hard to travel. Thus, my travel blog had been at a stand still. I started going to a University and I had a baby. Now I'm on a different kind of adventure. But my family and I plan on traveling when we can still. Traveling is something I cherish. New adventures is what keeps me moving, that and a stubbornness. I have a weird sense of humor if you haven´t figured that out from my posts. My writing can be perplexing, but I like to tell stories, and the best way is from my own experiences. So sit back and relax, as you take a spin through my hikes or enjoy following my footsteps as I wander in different countries! Most of my writings will be focused on hikes and the outdoors in Sweden.
