Hiking holidays in Spain is a dream destination for hikers the world over. Beautiful weather, testing tracks and irresistible views all await you in this walker’s wonderland – the only decision to make is which part of the country you’ll visit first. From the sun-soaked footways of Benidorm to the mountainous, rugged wilderness of Lanzarote, there’s a seemingly endless catalogue of special spots to explore in this stunning corner of the globe.

If you’re planning an excursion to this hiking mecca, it’s important to come prepared. Having the right supplies to hand will mean you can get the most out of your adventure, and most importantly, stay safe when tackling the trails. So, which items should be top of your packing list? Read this handy guide to find out.

Solid shoes

First and foremost, proper hiking boots are essential wherever in the world you’re planning to go. No matter whether you’re going to be testing yourself on hiking holidays in Spain’s most challenging routes, or treading more undemanding trails, solid shoes will keep your feet protected and comfortable to ensure blisters and injuries don’t hold you back.

Good hiking boots will give you the necessary level of support for your feet and ankles but will also be lightweight so as not to slow you down. There are no recommended guidelines in terms of when you should replace your boots, but it’s important to keep an eye out for any signs of wear and tear both before and during your trip.

My Kind of Shoes

When I look for a hiking boot, I tend to look for waterproof ones since the weather can always vary. This especially is true when you do all kinds of hikes in different climates. So, I like Meindl, Salomon, and Oboz. I have a variety of shoes depending on the hikes I plan on taking. First off, I’ve used my Meindl to take on Mount Kebnekaise among other hikes. When it comes to my Salomon’s, those are more for the hot day trails and where I know that weather isn’t going to become bad since they’re more for summer. Then, my good ole Oboz. These are more of my everyday boots that have had a lot of life and you probably soon have to retire. This one I’ve used the most on all kinds of trails.

What to Look For in a Shoe

Now, when I’m searching on a pair of shoes, I’m picking out a partner on my trails. So, comfort is a top priority that for some shoes takes a bit until you break them in. Another important thing I look for in many of my hiking shoes is that they’re waterproof. Lastly, their durability is important since I’m investing in these to last for a few years. On top of those things, having a good grip on wet surfaces is crucial. The first time I bought my first outdoor shoes, I got to test them on a rock form in the store which was a bit slippery. I was amazed at how much grip they had. I had been doing my hiking wrong for such a long time since I would hike with the cheapest kind of shoes. For example, when I hiked Colca Canyon in Peru!

Rehydration tablets

One item that’s often overlooked yet critical for any hiker’s inventory is rehydration tablets. Hiking holidays in Spain especially presents a rigorous physical challenge to one’s body, and replenishing lost fluids and electrolytes is essential. Trekking across the country’s variable terrain can lead to significant fluid loss through sweat, and simply drinking water might not be enough to replenish vital electrolytes. Rehydration tablets are scientifically formulated to restore your body’s balance of minerals like sodium, potassium, and magnesium, all of which are crucial for maintaining hydration levels, muscle function, and overall energy. In the high-stakes environment of remote trails and peak climbs, the ability to rehydrate efficiently is essential.

My Experience

Personally, I’ve never used rehydration tablets and that’s something that could have made a huge impact on some of my hikes. Instead, I have a banana or an apple packed away in my bag along with dried fruits and nuts. Yes, nuts can dry you out. But it gives you a bit of what you’re missing. Plus, I don’t go anywhere without my trusty water bottle!

Sun cream

Especially if you’re hiking during the summer months, it’s highly recommended to avoid walking during the late morning and early afternoon while on hiking holidays in Spain, at which time the sun will be at its most intense. However, whatever time of day or year you hit the tracks, it’s important to always protect your skin by using high-SPF sun cream.

Remember that even if you’re not walking in direct sunlight, UV rays can still cause significant damage to your skin. Not only will this make your hike more uncomfortable, but it could contribute to long-term health issues, so it’s imperative that you’re properly always protected.

Sunscreen and a Redhead

Sunscreen is something I have fought since I was little because I’m a redhead. But nowadays, I’ve realized that it’s helpful and if you’re like me and you don’t enjoy it, then maybe turn towards the eco-friendlier products or the other options to help with the sun. For instance, hats are always helpful along with light long sleeves.

First aid kit is Essential for Hiking Holidays in Spain

Despite your best efforts to plan and prepare for your hiking trip, unfortunately, things sometimes still go wrong, whether that’s a sprained ankle, bug bites, cuts, sunburn or any other type of issue. To protect yourself from these accidents, it’s also worth having some basic medical supplies in your bag. A hiker’s first aid kit will include items such as plasters, disinfectant, antiseptic wipes and tweezers. Whether you build your own kit or purchase one from a trusted supplier, make sure you properly equip yourself to avoid any slip-ups sending you on a detour.

It’s a Must Have!

Any time I go on a hike, even if it’s a short one, I have my first aid kit with me. It’s nice and lightweight and easily fits into my bag, which makes it not an issue to bring. Plus, since I have a 2.5-year-old now, accidents are more probable to happen. So, bringing this has turned to a must have even more!

Caminito del Rey, Spain, Travel

Camera/phone protector

One of the main joys of heading out on hiking holidays in Spain adventure is having the chance to savour some truly captivating landscapes. As well as enjoying the views in the moment, you’ll no doubt want to capture the Spanish sights on your phone or camera too. To keep this important piece of equipment safe, make sure you invest in a protector. Not only will this shield your tech from cracks and chips, but if you’re hiking during the notoriously wet winter months, a waterproof case will keep it safe from unpredictable weather.

Hold onto your Camera or Phone

When I was on El Caminito del Rey, an older man had dropped his phone down the side of the walking trail. It was a steep decline and I quickly jumped on getting it. I could tell he was going to do it and all I could think of is that he would hurt himself. I knew I was nimble. So, be careful with your cameras and phones when you’re out on a hike. Some of those trails, you might not get the chance to get it back. Plus, hurting yourself to get a device shouldn’t be worth it if you could seriously get hurt.

Hiking Holidays in Spain

These are just a handful of the most important items you need to remember when heading to having hiking holidays in Spain. With warm temperatures throughout the year, Spain can be a difficult place to navigate when exploring it on foot. That’s why proper preparation is so important, so make sure you allow plenty of time to plan your next trip, and you’ll be left to enjoy the adventure of a lifetime.

Safety Wing travel insurance, Nomad insurance

Travel Insurance

If you plan on doing a hike, especially in an unfamiliar place and country, then it’s best to have travel insurance. My go to is Safety Wing since they were created by digital nomads for digital nomads. Plus, there plans are affordable, and one adult also covers up to two kids that are 10 years old and younger. So, it makes it easier to bring the little ones out on these excursions since the kids can be covered as well! Check them out to see if they would work for you here!
